The Garden

Introduction

Welcome to our garden! We are working on making our property a pleasant place for both people and wildlife. We are doing this by using all native plants (except for the herb area) and following the wildscape principles.

Our garden is a certified National Wildlife Federation Backyard Wildlife Habitiat (#25162) and Texas Parks and Wildlife Texas Wildscape Backyard Wildlife Habitat (#1413).

Our garden is located in Austin, Texas in the Jollyville/Pond Springs area of Williamson County (just across the Travis County line).

History

We turned our property into a garden. We started by having buffalo grass installed in the back by the builders (who had scraped the lot months before we found the mostly completed house). We then added mostly native plants around the fence edges and the areas the builders had already mulched.

Next thing we knew we ripped up all of the St. Augustine grass from the front and covered it in mulch, then gradually filled it with plants. Check out our garden timeline for more information.

We have provided bulbs of Nutall's Camas from the garden to the University of Georgia Herbarium for chromosome research. We have also provided pictures of Prairie Rose from the garden to the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada of the Government of Canada for use in a report on threatened species and on their web site.

The Plan

Our current plan is to make the back garden mostly full sun prairie/savannah, with a thicket under the lone live oak and shrubs around the fence edges. The front garden will mostly exclude tall grasses and be somewhat more formal (but still a natural landscape) since we don't want to upset the neighbors.

Tech

This page is generated by a Python program I tossed together. Both the residents and weeds plant lists are XML files using the plantlist DTD that are parsed by a combination of a Python XML class loader and renderer I wrote and the python-XML package SAX library. The source code to my loader and renderer can be found here.
